Events
There are four categories of events in NCFCA competition. Our club is involved with those events for which we have interested students. Here are the events with a brief description of each:
- Platform Speech
- Persuasive Speech
- 10 minute time limit.
- Intended to persuade the audience to adopt a particular point of view or course of action.
- Quoted material no more than 30% of total words.
- Original Oratory
- 10 minute time limit.
- Topic chosen by speaker.
- Quoted material no more than 30% of total words.
- Illustrated Oratory
- 10 minute time limit.
- Use of illustrated boards on an easel and additional small visual aids permitted according specifications in NCFCA Official rules.
- Quoted material no more than 30% of total words.
- Interpretive Events
- Dramatic Interp
- 10 minute time limit.
- Up to 150 original words allowed for introduction.
- Performance of non-original, published piece of literature.
- Competitors may cut the piece to fit the time limit but may not change words.
- Humorous Interp
- 10 minute time limit.
- Up to 150 original words allowed for introduction.
- Performance of non-original, published piece of literature.
- Competitors may cut the piece to fit the time limit but may not change words.
- Duo Interp
- 10 minute time limit.
- Two competitors working together.
- Competitors may not touch or look directly at one another.
- Up to 150 original words allowed for introduction.
- Performance of non-original, published piece of literature.
- Competitors may cut the piece to fit the time limit but may not change words.
- Thematic Interp
- 10 minute time limit.
- Exploring a topic or theme through interpretation of literature and personal analysis
- 3 or more pieces of literature linked by competitor's connecting narrative.
- Limited Preparation Events
- Apologetics
- 4 minutes of prep time for a 6 minute speech.
- Questions obtained at beginning of season.
- May use pre-prepared 3x5 cards during speech.
- Impromptu
- 2 minutes of prep time for a 5 minute speech.
- Topic for speech is obtained at beginning of prep time.
- Most popular NCFCA event due to lack of formal preparation necessary.
- Extemporaneous
- Current events questions
- 30 minutes of prep for a 7 minute speech
- May make notes for speech on one 3x5 card during speech
- Debate
- Lincoln-Douglas (LD) Debate
- Also known as "Value" debate.
- 1 against 1.
- 45 minute round.
- 2010-2011 Resolution: RESOLVED: A government's legitimacy is determined more by its respect for popular sovereignty than individual rights.
- More philosophically oriented; concerned more with what should be done about a certain question.
- Team-Policy Debate
- Also known as TP.
- 2 against 2.
- 90 minute round.
- 2010-2011 Resolution: RESOLVED: That the United States Federal Government should significantly reform its policy toward Russia.
- More practical in orientation; concerned more with how something should be done.
